In Patagonia, man and animal enjoy a peaceful coexistence with nature. The infinite expanse of the country provides both with sufficient living space, even though the areas for wild animals have become smaller. A sheep needs around 5,000 square metres of space to be able to find enough food in the sclerophyllous vegetation of the pampas. No wonder that some estancias, as Argentine ranches are known, farm in excess of 30,000 hectares of land. Sheep shearing is the highlight of the year for the gauchos and owners of the estancias. The results show just how successful the year has been. But life as a gaucho has little to do with campfire romanticism and the Wild West. Their working lives are rather characterised by hard graft with dogs and horses. Puerto Deseado, including the Ria Deseado, which stretches some 60 kilometres into the hinterland, is one of the most spectacular nature locations of the world.
