Mitchel Resnick is an American computer scientist, professor at MIT, and creator of Scratch, a programming language for children. He’s also, in a way, responsible for the animated series “Mia & Codie.”
The series, over a decade in the making, uses a unique approach to early childhood education that Don Moody initially developed for his Emmy-winning show “WordWorld.” Debuting in 2007 and eventually airing in over 100 countries, “WordWorld” taught children to read by using a system where letters acted as building blocks.
“WordWorld’s” success led to the Department of Education inviting Don Moody to travel the country, engaging with educators and other interested parties. During one such trip, Moody met Resnick at MIT in 2009. Moody recalled that Resnick essentially challenged him to “do for programming what he did for reading,” arguing that coding skills are “the literacy of the future.” This planted a seed that eventually led Moody to fully commit to the “Mia & Codie” project in 2015, telling the adventures of Mia and her little robot brother, Codie.
